Things to Look for When Buying a Home for You and Your Dog
When shopping for a new home, there are many things to consider, like price, layout, location, number of bedrooms, and more. But if you look at homes to buy and think about whether it’ll work well for your dog, then you’re not alone. With dog and cat enthusiasts now being a large percentage of homebuyers, it’s becoming more popular to see decisions based on what works best for all the family members, including the pets.
Lucky for us, dogs are pretty easy to please and don’t ask for much as long as they have us by their sides. But some features will make your dog’s life, as well as yours, a bit more enjoyable when it comes to buying a home that’s a bit more dog friendly.
Yard and Fencing
Of course, a yard to enjoy is at the top of any dog owner’s list. It doesn’t matter if your dog is a puppy or if you have a senior pup. A yard will always be a bonus for any dog. When you’re looking for a home with a yard, the sizes will vary, so you’ll want to consider how you and your dog will use the yard. A small yard should be fine if your dog is more of a sunbather or is smaller and doesn’t need much room. However, if you have a high-energy dog that loves to run, it might be best to get a larger yard that gives them room to run.
One thing that’s often overlooked when looking at the yard is the type of fencing. Sure, fencing can be replaced if it’s not ideal. However, fencing is costly, and working with the neighbor on the other side of the fence may be more challenging than you think. Getting a house with a fence that’s hard to dig under, like a block fence or any fence that’s sunken down, will work best for dogs that are known to dig. Also, depending on your dog’s size and jumping abilities, remember to watch for the height of the fence.
Proximity to Dog Park
Do you like to take your dog to the dog park? Depending on where you’re planning to move, the nearest dog park may be a ways away. While this isn’t a determining factor when looking at a house to buy to share with your pooch, it’s something to think about when you’re looking at your options. Unfortunately, my dogs prefer people to dogs, so the dog park is not part of our routine. We like to visit the dog friendly parks in Bellingham.

Neighborhood
What kind of neighborhood is the house in? Is the house located on a busy main street that might put your dog in danger if they run out the front door or breaks out of the backyard one day? Are there sidewalks that are safe for you and your dog to take walks? These are all good things to ponder while you drive around the neighborhood to see if it’s dog friendly or not. I always recommend at least a couple hundred feet between your home and a busy road just in case you ever need the extra buffer for your pet.
