Nestled between the Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains, Bellingham, Washington, is a hidden gem in the Pacific Northwest with a vibrant food and drink scene. Whether you’re a local, a visitor, or someone who loves beer or coffee, Bellingham’s culinary offerings are a journey through diverse flavors, inventive dishes, and welcoming and inclusive atmospheres. Here, I’ll share my experiences at this charming city’s eight best restaurants and bars.
The Black Cat
Perched on the second floor of the historic Fairhaven building, The Black Cat offers a cozy ambiance and panoramic views of Bellingham Bay. This place is a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern cuisine. My go-to dish here is the seafood risotto, a creamy delight packed with fresh, local seafood. The bar’s extensive cocktail list is impressive, but the Fairhaven Fizz, with gin, elderflower liqueur, and fresh lemon juice, stands out as a favorite. Whether you’re dining inside amidst the vintage decor or enjoying the view from the balcony, a visit to the black cat is worthwhile.
Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro
Another staple in Bellingham’s brewing scene is Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro. Established in 1995, this brewery has become a local institution. The beer garden here is one of my favorite spots, especially during the warmer months when live music adds to the lively atmosphere. Boundary Bay’s Scotch Ale is a must-try, offering rich, malty flavors that are perfect for sipping. The bistro menu is equally enticing, with hearty dishes like their legendary mac and cheese, which is creamy, cheesy, and utterly satisfying. This spot perfectly captures the essence of Bellingham’s uplifting and inclusive community spirit.
D’Anna’s Cafe Italiano
For a taste of Italy in the Pacific Northwest, D’Anna’s Cafe Italiano is the place to be. This family-owned restaurant serves authentic Italian dishes in a warm, inviting setting. The hand-made pasta here is nothing short of spectacular. My personal favorite is the fettuccine alfredo with shrimp – the pasta is perfectly cooked, and the sauce is rich and flavorful. The cozy atmosphere, complete with checkered tablecloths and soft lighting, makes it an ideal spot for a romantic dinner or a family gathering. Don’t forget to try their tiramisu for dessert; it’s the perfect sweet ending to a delightful meal.
The Loft
Located in the historic Fairhaven district, The Loft offers a sophisticated dining experience with stunning views of Bellingham Bay. This restaurant specializes in Pacific Northwest cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients.
One of the standout dishes here is the cedar-planked salmon, which is cooked to perfection and accompanied by seasonal vegetables. The Loft’s cocktail menu is equally impressive, and I highly recommend the Lavender Lemon Drop – a perfect blend of tart and sweet with a floral twist. The elegant decor and breathtaking views make dining at The Loft a memorable experience.
Keenan’s
Keenan’s at the Pier is another gem that offers spectacular waterfront views and a delectable menu. Situated within the Chrysalis Inn & Spa, this restaurant is perfect for a special occasion or a relaxing meal after a day of exploring Bellingham. The menu features a variety of Pacific Northwest-inspired dishes, but the standout for me is the Dungeness crab cakes – they’re crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor. Keenan’s also boasts an impressive wine list, highlighting some of the best regional wines. The combination of excellent food, fine wine, and stunning views makes Keenan’s a top pick.
Rock and Rye Oyster House
For seafood lovers, Rock and Rye Oyster House is a paradise. Located downtown, this restaurant offers a rustic yet chic atmosphere with an emphasis on fresh, sustainable seafood. The oyster selection here is exceptional, and I highly recommend starting with a dozen on the half shell, served with a variety of tangy mignonettes. Another standout dish is the bouillabaisse, a hearty seafood stew that’s both comforting and flavorful. The bar at Rock and Rye also deserves a mention, with expertly crafted cocktails that perfectly complement the seafood offerings. The ambiance is lively yet intimate, making it a great spot for any occasion.
Temple Bar
Last but certainly not least is Temple Bar, a cozy and eclectic spot that’s perfect for winding down with a drink and some light bites. This bar has an intimate atmosphere with dim lighting and unique decor that makes it feel like a hidden gem. The cheese and charcuterie boards here are excellent, offering a well-curated selection that pairs wonderfully with their extensive wine list. For cocktails, the Blackberry Sage Margarita is a must-try – it’s a refreshing blend of sweet and herbal flavors. Temple Bar’s laid-back vibe and friendly service make it a great place to relax and enjoy good company.

Skylark’s Hidden Cafe
Located in the historic Fairhaven district, Skylark’s Hidden Cafe is a charming spot that offers a delightful blend of American and European cuisine. This cafe has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a beautiful garden patio that’s perfect for a sunny day. I absolutely love their eggs Benedict, which is served with a rich hollandaise sauce and perfectly poached eggs. Skylark’s also has an impressive selection of wines and craft beers, making it an excellent choice for brunch or a relaxed evening out. The friendly service and cozy ambiance make Skylark’s a standout in Bellingham’s culinary scene.
Scotty Browns
Scotty Browns is a modern, upbeat restaurant and bar located in the Barkley Village neighborhood. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse menu, it’s a fantastic place for both casual and special occasions. The menu features a mix of international flavors with standout items like the crispy chicken sandwich and the tuna poke bowl. Their cocktail menu is extensive, but I particularly enjoy their signature Caesar, a Lemon Drop. With its sleek decor and lively vibe, Scotty Browns is a great spot to enjoy a night out in Bellingham.
