Nestled in the lush greenery of the Pacific Northwest, Sudden Valley offers a peaceful and picturesque setting. Situated along the shores of Lake Whatcom, this idyllic community boasts an array of amenities and natural beauty that make it a desirable place to call home.
History
Sudden Valley has been a neighborhood since the 1970s and has become a bedroom community for people working in Bellingham and the surrounding area. Sudden Valley is a partially gated community with seven gates. Sudden Valley is not within the city limits of Bellingham; it is a census-designated place (CDP).
Community Association
The Community Association of Sudden Valley has a rich history. It began as “the Ranch” when Banning Austin sold the land to Glen and Betty Corning in 1949. The area was then named “the Ranch,” the Cornings lived there with their children until 1968. They eventually sold 1,200 acres of property to Ken Sanwick of Sudden Valley Inc. Sanwick envisioned the land as “Sudden Valley Undevelopment” and aimed to preserve the natural surroundings while incorporating homes into the wilderness.
Approval
By 1969, the County Commissioners approved the first plan for 158 lots west of Lake Whatcom Boulevard. In December 1976, ownership and control were transferred to the newly named Sudden Valley Community Association. From then on, the SVCA held the title to all the roads, parks, greenbelt, recreation facilities, marina, airstrip, and country club.
Residents
Since its inception in the late 1960s, Sudden Valley has been home to over 6,000 residents. It has a marina, library, parks, playgrounds, miles of hiking trails, and an 18-hole golf course designed by architect Ted Robinson.
One of Sudden Valley’s defining features is its proximity to Lake Whatcom. Residents can enjoy various water activities, from kayaking and paddleboarding to simply taking in the breathtaking views of the lake. The serene ambiance of the lake creates a sense of calm and relaxation, making it the perfect backdrop for strolls and moments of quiet reflection.
Recreation Center
For golf enthusiasts, Sudden Valley is home to a scenic golf course that offers a challenging game and stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape.
The community center recreation area includes a state-of-the-art fitness center and an outdoor 25-yard swimming pool. A “quiet pool” is also available near the library.
If you’re considering a move to Sudden Valley, you’ll find a haven that embraces the beauty of the outdoors, fosters a sense of community, and offers a tranquil way of life.
